The main ports in Sri Lanka are three in number - namely Colombo,
Galle and Trincomalee. Colombo and Galle are both man made, while Trincomalee is one of the World's
largest natural Harbours. All three have alongside berths. |

Colombo Port
Port of Colombo is located at latitude 60 - 57'N and longitude
79o - 51'E in the West coast in Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka, and is the principal port of the
country. The port is man made harbour enclosing an area between the North side of the Fort and the Mutwal
point formed by three breakwaters built during the period 1875 to 1912. The breakwaters have a concrete

Galle Port
Port of Galle is located in the Galle Bay at latitude 60-01'N and
longitude 820 - 12' about 120 km from the Port of Colombo on the South West of the island. It presently is
the only commercial port in the south of the country
Although the Galle Bay forms a natural harbour it is only protected from the east monsoon and is subjected

Trincomalee Port
Trincomalee harbour commands a large body of sheltered water and has
two sectors, the Inner Harbour and the Outer Harbour.
The Outer Harbour comprises the Trincomalee Bay, which has the approaches to the harbour and the Koddiyar
Bay. The Inner Harbour is defined by latitude 80 - 31'N and longitude 810 - 15'E has a water area of about
2,023 hectares and a land area of nearly 5,261 hectares.
